Established in 2000, the Department is one of the largest teaching and research units in its field in the United Kingdom with over 100 active research staff working around five principal areas: Government, Theory, International Relations, the Politics of Development and the application of quantitative methods in political and social science. The Department is located in the new Social Sciences building on Manor Road along with the Departments of Economics and Sociology, the Centres for Criminology and Socio-Legal Studies and the new Social Science Library. A highly qualified and experienced administrative team supports the Department's research and teaching activities.

Administrative Officer [6 month fixed term cover]

Grade 4: Salary £19,645 - £22,765 p.a.

We are seeking a well organised individual with excellent interpersonal and communication skills to provide a six month cover for a key post within the Department’s core administration. This post provides administrative support for the Head of Department and Administrator, co-ordinates the Department’s visitor programme and carries out administration for a range of faculty matters, such as inductions, academic leave and academic reviews.

The successful candidate will have a good level of education, excellent IT skills, a sense of professionalism and a flexible attitude towards their work. Previous experience of the higher education sector administration would be advantageous.

Post-Doctoral Research Fellow - Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism

Salary scale: £28,839 - £30,594 per annum

The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, part of the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Oxford, is pleased to invite applications for a post-doctoral research fellow to work on a comparative project addressing: ‘Threats and Opportunities to the Business of Journalism and its role in Democracy’ in the UK, USA, 2-3 European countries, Brazil and India. The fellowship will be either full time for 6 months or part time for 9 – 12 months.

The role of the research fellow will involve a desk-based research study addressing evidence of the impact of the internet on advertising-funded journalism, differing policy responses and the implication of these for democracy and accountability in the target countries. The post-holder will be responsible for the co-ordination of a comparative workshop and publication of key findings, as well as assisting in the development of a longer term research programme in this area.

The successful candidate will hold a completed doctorate (or evidence of imminent completion) in a relevant field. A record of research and writing achievement at an international level or the demonstrable potential to develop one, familiarity with the existing literature and research in the relevant field are essential. The post-holder will be based at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism premises at Norham Gardens, Oxford, OX2.

Post-Doctoral Research Fellow - Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism

The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, part of the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Oxford, is pleased to invite applications for a post-doctoral research fellow to work on a project addressing the role of the provision and use of international media and news flows in the developing world. The project will set out to examine the following issues in comparative perspective across the 8 countries, including: 6 countries in Africa (two each from North Africa, Francophone and Anglophone Africa) together with India and Pakistan:

  • The rapidly changing provision of global news from international providers
  • Changing patterns in the consumption of global news
  • Changes in trust in news providers.

The post-holder will conduct a 12 month, desk-based research programme on the issues of provision, consumption and trust in the countries studied. This will include a thorough literature review, identification of key data - whether public domain or elsewhere - that might be useful to the project, and the drafting of publication outputs to target audiences.The successful candidate will hold a completed doctorate (or evidence of imminent completion). A record of research and writing achievement at an international level or the demonstrable potential to develop one, familiarity with the existing literature and research in the relevant field are essential. Excellent English language skills both written and verbal, are essential and good working knowledge of French and/or Arabic are essential. The post-holder will be based at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism premises at Norham Gardens, Oxford, OX2.

Research Fellow - Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism

The successful candidate will hold a completed doctorate (or evidence of imminent completion), or equivalent research experience in a relevant field. A record of research and writing achievement at an international level or the demonstrable potential to develop one, familiarity with the existing literature and research in the relevant field are essential. Excellent English language skills both written and verbal, are essential and good working knowledge of French and/or Arabic are desirable. The post-holder will be based at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism premises at Norham Gardens, Oxford, OX2.

Oxford-Princeton Global Leaders Programme Post-doctoral Fellowships

Salary: £28,839 - £35,469 per annum

Applications are invited from nationals of non-OECD countries for a number of two-year fellowships to work on global governance and the role of developing and emerging countries in the world political economy. Up to six such fellowships will be awarded to start in September 2010, for a year’s study at Oxford followed by a year at Princeton. Post-holders will be provided with appropriate stipends sufficient to cover full living costs. The programme intends to establish a network of leading scholar-practitioners in global governance.

Applicants must be nationals of non-OECD countries (this is a condition stipulated by the donor). They must have completed (or have evidence of imminent completion of) a doctorate in a relevant area. They should also show evidence of outstanding analytical and research skills. In addition, candidates will be required to demonstrate their plans for a clearly articulated research project which is relevant to the Programme’s aims.
