Ngaire Woods participated in a programme entitled “The World Debate - Reinventing Capitalism" for BBC World Service (27 January), recorded at this year's World Economic Forum meeting at Davos.
Ngaire asked the panel to comment about the short-termism of capitalism, and pointed to the gap between the short term planning of the publicly-owned company (with CEOs generally staying for 3 to 4 years, shareholders' shares changing hands around 4 times a day, and boards not generally being independent) and the need for a longer view on “the companies that fire capitalism.”
For Ngaire’s questions and the responses listen here (c.09:05 at approximately on the iPlayer clock).
Professor Ngaire Woods is Professor of International Political Economy, Director of the Global Economic Governance Programme, University College
