Alumni Career Conversations: Giving a great job talk and interview

The Department is delighted to announce that the next session in our Alumni Career Conversations series will be on giving a great job talk and interview.

The series provides an opportunity for current students and DPIR alumni to learn from our speakers’ career stories and benefit from their experience and advice.

The next talk will take place virtually via Zoom Meetings, on Wednesday 16 February, 13:00-14:30 GMT and will focus on academic jobs, but is also highly applicable to others.

Speakers Arthur Spirling (NYU) and Jane Green (Oxford) will provide insights and tips for delivering the all-important academic job talk (why it matters; how to prepare for and structure your talk; strategies for delivering a successful talk; common pitfalls to avoid), as well as advice on preparing for your job interview.

There will be an opportunity for meeting participants to ask questions in an informal ‘ask anything’ Q&A session at the end of the talk.

Information about our speakers:

Arthur Spirling is Professor of Politics and Data Science at New York University. He is the Deputy Director and the Director of Graduate Studies (MSDS) at the Center for Data Science, and Chair of the Executive Committee of the Moore-Sloan Data Science Environment. He has written an essay on rejection and shared a talk on job talks that many people found very helpful.

Jane Green is Professor of Political Science and British Politics at DPIR. Jane is the Director of the Nuffield Politics Research Centre, Co-Director of the British Election Study and Elections Analyst for ITV News’ twice BAFTA nominated live election results programmes. She has extensive television and radio interview experience and applies this in a range of academic settings.

Please note that this event is for current members and alumni of DPIR only.
