Annette Idler wins top prize for book on the life under armed groups in cross-border territories

DPIR Senior Research Associate Annette Idler has won the Latin American Studies Association’s Premio Iberoamericano Book Award for her book Fronteras Rojas.

The book centres on the life under armed groups in cross-border territories and is an updated version of her book Borderland Battles: Violence, Crime, and Governance at the Edges of Colombia's War, translated into Spanish.

It also contains an additional prologue by former FARC hostage and Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt.

The Premio Iberoamericano is presented at each of the Latin American Studies Association’s International Congresses for the outstanding book on Latin America in the social sciences and humanities published in Spanish or Portuguese in any country.

I am delighted about this award! It also is an award to all the borderlanders across Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela who live in contexts of armed conflict and the illicit economy.

It helps make their voices heard and take their efforts to work towards a more secure life seriously.
Annette Idler, also Director of the Global Security Programme at Pembroke College.
