David Doyle appointed as next Head of Department

The Department is delighted to report that Professor David Doyle will take on the role of Head of Department from September 2024, for a period of three years. We are grateful to the current joint Heads of Department, Associate Professor of Politics, Nick Owen, and Professor of Comparative Politics, Petra Schleiter, who have kindly agreed to extend their post for an extra year until Professor Doyle can take over.

For the last two years Professor David Doyle has held the Director of Research position within the DPIR Academic Officers team. He will continue in this role, until September 2024.

As Professor of Politics, a Fellow of St Hugh’s College and a member of Oxford’s Latin American Centre, his research and teaching interests centre around comparative politics and comparative political economy. He is currently working on two main projects; one on taxation and tax morale in Latin America, and the other on the political effects of migrant remittances. He is also part of the editorial team of the Journal of Latin American Studies and is currently the Director of the Latin American Centre here at Oxford.

Commenting on his appointment, Professor Doyle said:

“The DPIR is a world-leading political science department, and is fantastic place to work with wonderful colleagues. I am very excited at the prospect of working with everyone to further cement the position of the DPIR as a top department. As I begin the process of preparing for this role and engaging with colleagues, I would also like to thank Nick and Petra for the amazing job which they have done over the last three years and which they will continue to do next academic year.”

By the time that Professor Doyle takes up his new position as Head of Department in September 2024, Dr Nick Owen and Professor Petra Schleiter will have served the department in its first ever Joint Headship for four years. Over the next year they will continue to split the duties with Dr Nick Owen leading on teaching and courses, non-academic HR, communications, development, building matters, and health and safety, and Professor Petra Schleiter leading on research, finance, the REF, the department's relations with Division and key aspects of academic HR, including recognition of distinction and the award of titles. All members of the department should continue to contact them regarding these areas as per normal, until September 2024.
