Dr Audrey Kurth Cronin has been awarded 5,000 from the John Fell OUP Research Fund: Small Grants Scheme to provide funding for her international academic workshop, Challenging Deterrence.` The workshop will be a joint undertaking between Changing Character of War Programme and the International Institute for Strategic Studies, London and will take place in 2006, dates to be confirmed.

The workshop will examine the concept of strategic deterrence from both a theoretical/normative and a policy-relevant perspective, recognizing that any thorough examination of deterrence must include a norms-based approach. The workshop will question how the concept of deterrence is challenged today. The goal of the workshop is to expand the parameters of the strategic debate on deterrence and connect the concept to a wider range of international perspectives, to ensure up-to-date and effective incorporation into practical policy.

Audrey is the Academic Director of Studies for the Changing Character of War Programme. Some of her recent publications include How al-Qaeda Ends,` International Security, Vol. 31, No. 1 (forthcoming Summer 2006); Cyber-Mobilization: The New Levee en Masse,` Parameters, (forthcoming Spring 2006); and Attacking Terrorism: Elements of a Grand Strategy (with James Ludes) Georgetown University Press, 2004.
