Professor Alexander Betts offers Financial Times correction on immigration numbers

Alexander Betts has had a letter published in the Financial Times (23 September) which offers a clarification on an immigration statistic that is often misinterpreted.

He writes that an FT article published on 21 September “makes an important case that we need to rethink the global refugee system for a different era.” He adds, “But it does so based on a false premise that ‘the number deemed refugees has soared sixfold from 10m in 1985 to almost 60m 30 years on’.” He goes on to suggest why this figure of approximately 60 million is often quoted.
