Rana Mitter receives 2020 Medlicott Medal from HA

Rana Mitter, Director of the Oxford China Centre and Professor of the History and Politics of Modern China, will receive the 2020 Medlicott Medal from the Historical Association.

In response to the news, Professor Mitter said: ‘It's an immense honour to be awarded the Medlicott Medal, which has been held by such a wide range of distinguished historians. I'm particularly pleased that Chinese history has been noted this year – at a time when he rise of China means that that country will have an impact on all of our lives, it's more and more important for us to have a clear sense of the historical forces that have shaped it.’

The Medlicott Medal is awarded annually by the Association to recognise ‘outstanding services and current contributions’ to the field of history. In the past, recipients have included Mary Beard (2017), Simon Schama (2002), and Eric Hobsbawm (1999).

The award will be presented to Professor Mitter in the summer at the Association’s annual awards evening. He will also deliver the evening’s keynote address.
