Area of research:
My doctoral research asks why state and non-state actors comply with apex court decisions in new democracies. I argue that compliance emerges from the interaction between the severity of judicial orders, which combines remedial vagueness and monitoring, and the compliance capacity of obligated actors.
Courts likewise decide strategically whether to retain supervision after judgment and how intensively to exercise it.
Three studies examine these claims through original decision-level datasets from the Constitutional Courts of Colombia and Ecuador, built using computational text analysis, alongside interviews with judges and litigants and a conjoint experiment on citizens' responses to publicised noncompliance.
