Europe is facing a moment of profound moment of crisis. From Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and shifting transatlantic dynamics to economic stagnation, political fragmentation, and the rise of populism, the foundations of the European project are under strain. In this talk, Timothy Garton Ash will reflect on the nature of Europe’s current crisis, examining whether it represents a temporary convergence of challenges or a deeper structural turning point. Drawing on recent developments, he will explore what is at stake for European unity, democracy, and the continent’s role in an increasingly volatile global order. Timothy Garton Ash is Professor of European Studies at Oxford and one of Europe’s most prominent historians. A best-selling author whose works on the revolutions of 1989, free speech, and the future of democracy have been translated into more than 30 languages, he shapes public debate beyond academia. In recognition of his contributions to European thought and unity, he was awarded the Charlemagne Prize.
