Ever since the September 11 2001 terror attacks by Al Qaeda in the United States,
the major transnational terrorism threat in Southeast Asia has been fuelled by
violent Islamist ideology. Certainly, since the mid-2010s and with the emergence
of the Islamic State (IS) as a major online vector of radicalisation, the
phenomenon of youth radicalisation has become a significant threat in the region
and certainly in Singapore. The talk will examine evolving youth radicalization
trends in Singapore and the region, exploring its drivers as well as the emergence
of newer forms of non-Islamist, “hybrid" extremism, and discuss ways to deal
with the challenge.
