China’s economic imbalances have been in the headlines, appearing as major points of friction between China and other major economies. Yet the phenomenon is not well understood. In this lecture, Professor Huang will delve into the complex causes behind China’s economic imbalances, and suggest some potential pathways for resolution. He will then discuss what the implications are for China’s relations with its major economic partners, for the global trading system, and prospects for growth. Join Professor Huang, Dean of the National School of Development at Peking University, to mark the first of the 2026 - 2027 China Lecture Series hosted by Yeling Tan, Professor of Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government. Dean Huang will give his lecture on China’s economic imbalances and implications for the world, followed by discussant comments by David Lubin, Michael Klein Senior Research Fellow in the Global Economy and Finance Programme at Chatham House. Please note that this event takes place in person only.
