More than 125 people attended the Lester B. Pearson Inaugural Lecture on Wednesday, 12 November, marking the appointment of Professor Krzysztof Pelc to this highly prestigious position.
Professor Pelc delivered his lecture on 'Passions, Preferences, and the Politics of Self-Binding' at Oxford’s Examination Schools.
This lecture explored why both people and governments sabotage their own long-term plans. Just as individuals give in to impulse, leaders succumb to political temptations—printing money before elections, pleasing lobbies, or stoking majority bias.
It asked when rules and constraints help us stay disciplined, when they become oppressive, and how smarter political institutions can balance passion with prudence.
