Announcing the launch of a new MSc in Politics of Global Challenges

Date
Political uncertainty and volatility are defining features of today’s world. As global challenges become more interconnected, complex, and transnational, there is growing demand for postgraduate study that is both interdisciplinary and considers real world challenges.

The Department of Politics and International Relations is responding to this need with the launch of the MSc in Politics of Global Challenges – an innovative, one-year programme designed for the next generation of global thinkers and policymakers.

This masters programme will integrate diverse theoretical perspectives across the disciplines, enabling students to make connections between political thought, empirical research, and policy.

It aims to equip students with a deep understanding of pressing global problems, from climate change and global inequalities to the spread of populism and increasing conflict and insecurity.

The programme brings together teaching and research across the Department’s three academic pillars of Comparative Government, International Relations, and Political Theory. There will be a central core interdisciplinary course, spanning the first two terms, complemented by two substantive option courses, and finishing with a 10,000-word dissertation.

The course has been carefully designed to meet the needs of a diverse student body, including those aiming to enter professional careers in public policy, international organisations, NGOs, consultancy, or the media, as well as those who may be considering pursuing doctoral research.

The MSc in Politics of Global Challenges is designed to be both intellectually ambitious and professionally relevant.

New interim Head of Department, Professor David Rueda said:

This programme enables students to think critically about global politics while developing the analytical, communication, and research skills valued across sectors. This reflects the Department’s recognition that today’s postgraduate students increasingly seek courses that prepare them not only for academic progression but also for meaningful impact beyond university.”
