DPIR DPhil student awarded the European University Institute's Max Weber Fellowship

The European University Institute (EUI), located in Florence, Italy, is Europe’s postgraduate and postdoctoral research university dedicated to the social sciences and humanities. The Max Weber Programme is a highly selective postdoctoral programme open to global applicants within 5 years from the completion of their PhD.

This year, we are delighted to announce that Alexandra Stafford (DPhil student in International Relations) has been awarded the Max Weber Fellowship in Political and Social Sciences.

Alexandra told us: "I am incredibly grateful for the mentorship, kindness, and generous support of my supervisor, Ezequiel González-Ocantos, who skillfully shepherded me through my MPhil and DPhil. I also want to acknowledge Eddie Keene, Duncan Snidal, Andrew Thompson, Vincent Pouliot, John de Bhal, and the members of the Seminar in the History of International Politics, as well as other members of the DPIR and Nuffield College, who have had a huge impact on my research. The generous support of the Joseph L. Allbritton Scholarship and of Nuffield College allowed me to complete my MPhil and DPhil in the DPIR.

As a Max Weber Fellow, I plan to develop my book manuscript, entitled Capturing International Criminal Law: Expertise and Politics in International Legal Governance. My book theorizes the historical development and potential future of the International Criminal Law (ICL) field. I am very excited to have the opportunity to engage with the EUI’s vibrant interdisciplinary community."

Her supervisor Ezequiel González Ocantos said: "Alexandra is a superstar and this achievement confirms it. I’m delighted that she will have the opportunity to spend time at the EUI turning her amazing dissertation - a genealogy of the field of international criminal law - into a first-class book."
