Dr Olga Onuch writes for the Washington Post on the current Venezuela protests

Olga Onuch, an alumna of the department (2014) currently at the University of Manchester, has co-written an article for the ‘Monkey Cage’ blog of The Washington Post (25 May) entitled ‘Don’t be duped or misled about the Venezuela protests. These 5 insights will help.

The five points that the article makes are: (1) The most popular images may not be real, (2) Young people may offer great sound bites but may not be great organizers, (3) Old tactics and civil society matter in a new media world, (4) While massive, the protests might not be inclusive enough to force a change in government and (5) Protesters have clear demands and it’s rarely just about the economy.

The article also makes reference to Olga’s paper co-authored with Gwendolyn Sasse, and her book entitled ‘Mapping Mass Mobilization: Understanding Revolutionary Moments in Argentina and Ukraine’.
