Ranas was one of .ve awards in the category of Medieval, Early Modern and Modern History, for his work on the history and modern politics of China. The Prize assessors commented that

To acquire the knowledge and linguistic skills required to become a professional historian of China is a formidable task, and Rana Mitter has already demonstrated that he has these credentials.

It is hoped that the prize money will be used to fund a one-year replacement lecturer to allow Rana an additional year of leave to continue his current research on Chinas war with Japan, 1931 to the present. Ranas new book A Bitter Revolution has also been awarded runner-up (proxime accessit) for the 2005 Longman/History Today Book of the Year prize.
