Dr Sudhir Hazareesingh Awarded a Fondation Napolon Grand Prix

Date

Dr Sudhir Hazareesingh has been awarded the Second Empire Prize from the Fondation Napolon for his book La Lgende de Napolon, published in Paris by the Editions Tallandier earlier this year.

The book uses French archival sources to explain how and why Napoleon Bonaparte became a legendary figure in Frances collective memory, inspiring a political cult which celebrated him not only as a great warrior but also as one of the symbols of modern French democracy. Earlier this year, the book was awarded the Grand Prix du Mmorial, Corsicas principal literary prize.

As part of its mission, the Fondation Napolon, located on Boulevard Haussmann, encourages research and public interest in the history of the two empires. Every year a jury composed of some of the most eminent First and Second Empire historians awards four Grands Prix in the name of the Fondation Napolon. This years Prizes were awarded on 21 November, 2006, at a lunch ceremony in the Jockey Club de Paris in the presence of HIH, the Princess Napolon.

Dr Sudhir Hazareesingh is a Fellow of the British Academy and CUF Lecturer in Politics and Tutorial Fellow in Politics, Balliol College.
