The University of Oxford is the first UK university to provide free access to ChatGPT Edu, powered by OpenAI’s GPT-5 model, for all staff and students. Following a successful year-long pilot, the rollout offers a secure, university-wide platform designed for education, with enhanced privacy and data protection.
Professor Anne Trefethen, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Digital, said:
“This is an exciting step in our digital transformation — enabling safe, responsible, and inclusive access to generative AI for study, research, and professional use.”
Oxford is also launching training, guidance, and support on responsible AI use through courses, webinars, and an AI Competency Centre.
The partnership with OpenAI will extend to research on AI’s societal impact and explore ways to use AI to enhance teaching, learning, and access to knowledge across the University.
