Successful start to the Civil Resistance and Power Politics Project

Professor Adam Roberts (Montague Burton Professor of International Relations) and Professor Timothy Garton Ash (European Studies Centre, Director) have been successful in gaining funding for their new research project on ‘Civil Resistance and Power Politics: Domestic and International Dimensions’ from the International Center for Nonviolent Conflict (Washington DC), the Zeit Foundation (Hamburg) and the Canadian government. This new interdisciplinary project is located jointly in the Centre for International Studies in the Department and the European Studies Centre at St Antony’s. The Project will assess the nature and significance of civil (i.e. non-violent) resistance, especially, though not exclusively, in the period since the 1960s. It aims first and foremost to raise the academic level of treatment of the subject and will look at how this phenomenon, as opposed to military action, has affected change in authoritarian societies. The project will explore some of the related issues at a conference to be held in Oxford on 28 September to 1 October 2006, as well as through a number of complementary workshops, seminars and other forms of academic output, including a major scholarly edited book.
