Sudhir Hazareesingh on the rise of French presidential frontrunner Emmanuel Macron

Sudhir has written an article for the Times Literary Supplement (15 March) about the current frontrunner in the French presidential race: Emmanuel Macron.

He writes, “One of the keys to Macron’s appeal is his appreciation, and astute exploitation, of the visceral collective contempt for the French political establishment. The revolution that he proposes is directed squarely at the political system, whose conformism and decadence he lambasts: “it is evident”, he asserts, “that the public morality, the sense of history, and the human quality of our leaders has severely declined”. One of the root causes of this phenomenon, according to him, is the emergence of a professional political class, cut off from the dynamic sectors of French society, and poorly representative of women, entrepreneurs, workers and ethnic minorities.”

Sudhir also featured as a guest on the weekly podcast produced by the Times Literary Supplement (16 March), in which he confessed to being pleasantly surprised by the quality of Emmanuel Macron’s book: Révolution.
