What is the MSc in Politics of Global Challenges?

This new master’s programme will integrate diverse theoretical perspectives across the disciplines, enabling students to make connections between political thought, empirical research, and policy. It aims to equip students with a deep understanding of pressing global problems, from climate change and global inequalities to the spread of populism and increasing conflict and insecurity.

Designed around today's most pressing political challenges, the course brings together expertise from across Political Theory, International Relations and Comparative Politics to equip students with the analytical tools needed to understand complex global issues.

Dr Gideon Elford, Course Director, introduces the MSc in Politics of Global Challenges, from what makes the programme distinctive to what you’ll study and the skills you’ll develop.

Programme Developer Dr Meera Sabaratnam explains how the MSc in Politics of Global Challenges is designed to equip students to see major global challenges from multiple perspectives.

Why is it needed now?

Political uncertainty and volatility are defining features of today’s world. As global challenges become more interconnected, complex, and transnational, there is growing demand for postgraduate study that is both interdisciplinary and considers real world challenges.

The Department of Politics and International Relations is responding to this need with the launch of the MSc in Politics of Global Challenges.

“This programme enables students to think critically about global politics while developing the analytical, communication, and research skills valued across sectors. This reflects the Department’s recognition that today’s postgraduate students increasingly seek courses that prepare them not only for academic progression but also for meaningful impact beyond university.”

Professor David Rueda, Head of Department
