About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for you to join the University of Oxford as an Apprentice Finance Assistant in the Department of Politics & International Relations. The role was created to assist the team in meeting its increased workload, and to enable it to further improve its service to the Department.

You will join a busy small finance team which currently comprises the Finance Manager, Deputy Finance Manager, Senior Finance Officer and Finance Assistant. Your main duties will be to process financial transactions including purchase orders, purchase invoices, casual payroll, expense claims and sales invoices, gaining an understanding of how this interfaces with reporting. You will also assist in work to monitor compliance with financial policies and procedures There will be opportunities to gain experience in aspects of financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting.

You will work closely with other members of the Finance Team, and will also work with other staff in the Department and with key contacts in the Central University offices.

About the apprenticeship

As part of this role, you will undertake an Apprenticeship with Abingdon & Witney College, where you will complete the Accounts and Finance Assistant Intermediate Apprenticeship.  You will take the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) level 2 qualification.  For this apprenticeship, you will work at the Department of Politics & International Relations located at the Manor Road Building in Oxford. The Department supports some flexible working patterns.

As part of your apprenticeship, you will be required to attend Abingdon & Witney College (either the Abingdon or Witney location) where you will need to attend the college one day a week during term time.

In total, it will take two years to complete all elements of the apprenticeship, with support from the Department, University, and College throughout. There may be an option to extend the apprenticeship a further year, enabling the completion of the next level of the AAT qualification.

About you

To complete the level 2 apprenticeship you will need to evidence passes at 9-4 or A*-C in GCSE Maths and English. Please note that the Training Provider is required to assess your current ability in Maths and English as part of the application process, even if you already have your English and Maths qualifications.  There are government residency requirements for Apprenticeship funding which the Training Provider will be able to advise on.
