The Department of Politics and International Relations, in association with the Oxford Martin School-funded research programme on Changing Global Orders, invites applications for a research assistant in international relations and global governance, with a focus on regionalism and regional institutions. Reporting to the Changing Global Orders Co-Directors, Professor Louise Fawcett and Professor Andrew Hurrell, the post holder will work independently to provide research support and research administration support for the programme’s work, especially in areas concerning comparative regionalism, regional institutions, and the changing role of regions within global order. Administrative support will include events/publications planning and organisation.

The successful applicant will gather, analyse and present qualitative and/or quantitative data from a variety of sources, as well as undertake comprehensive and systematic literature reviews and write up the results for publication in peer-reviewed journals or for presentation at conferences or public meetings. They will also be required to manage their own academic research and administrative activities, within guidelines provided by the Co-Directors, and select, follow, and adapt specialist methodologies to confirm or refute theories, and identify suitable alternatives where information or research material is restricted.

About you

You will hold a first degree, together with some relevant experience and be working toward a doctorate in International Relations or a closely related discipline. You will also possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes and have an active research interest in regionalism, global governance/global order, and international institutions.

Excellent communication skills (including the ability to write text that can be published, present data at conferences) are essential. Experience of contributing to research publications, of contributing ideas for new research projects and reading and writing knowledge of modern language(s) would be desirable.

This role is fixed term until 30 September 2025 (limited by external funding) and is part-time at 0.17 FTE (on average 6 hours a week, some flexibility required dependent on the project need).
