Professor Petra Schleiter is seeking a casual Graduate Research Assistant to work on the Gender-Equal Pay Project that examines the impact of the 2023 EU pay transparency directive across EU states, for 12 weeks.

The gender pay gap across EU member states is large, persistent, and detrimental. Women’s average gross hourly earnings in the EU are currently 12.7% lower than those of men, contributing to economic insecurity and poverty for women, economic instability of families, and depressing national GDPs. This gender pay gap has persisted despite over 50 years of equal pay legislation, which failed to change the attitudes and behaviour of employees and employers. In March 2023, the European Parliament adopted the EU Pay Transparency Directive that aims to address the gender pay gap by requiring member states to enact binding pay transparency measures within three years. The Directive will cause a wave of national-level pay transparency legislation, and represents the most significant opportunity in decades to close the gender pay gap.

This project studies how key design features of the pay transparency policies required by the Directive affect attitudinal support for gender equal pay and behavior among employers and employees. In the first instance, it focuses on original surveys with embedded conjoint experiments to identify the causal effect of specific policy design features on support for gender equal pay in a sample of four EU member states.

Responsibilities:

  • Literature search to identify the key findings of prior work on the effect of pay transparency policies;
  • Tracking the implementation of the Pay Transparency Directive (2023) and all analysis of it;
  • Assisting in the development of survey instruments with embedded conjoint experiments in multiple EU countries;
  • Monitoring survey data collection and quotas in collaboration with YouGov; performing initial randomization and data quality checks on the survey data;
  • Liaising with researchers at the OECD, RAND, the European Commission, and the European Parliament who are working on aspects of this reform.
