Addier Giovanni Arriola Laura
I am a DPhil student in Politics, supervised by Professor Ezequiel González Ocantos. My studies are generously funded by Nuffield College and the Clarendon Scholarship. My research examines criminal governance, state capacity, and the functioning of illegal and informal economies, using a mixed-methods, qualitative approach. My doctoral proposal specifically examines the variables that explain the variability of ‘criminal governments’ in areas of illegal mining that share similar historical processes in Latin America. More broadly, my academic interest centres on ‘non-state’ forms of social, political and economic order.
Before joining Oxford, I completed my undergraduate studies in Political Science at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP). I then completed an MSc in Criminal Justice Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), where I was awarded two Titmuss Prizes for outstanding performance and an outstanding dissertation. My dissertation, ‘Policing extractive environmental crimes: a comparative study of illegal gold mining in Madre de Dios and La Libertad, Peru 2021–2024’, examined the role of non-state actors in policing illegal mining against a backdrop of weak state capacity and the Peruvian state’s limited territorial reach.
I have also worked as a research analyst specialising in organised crime at the Peruvian Ministry of the Interior and as a research officer specialising in restorative justice at Restorative Justice for All (RJ4All) in the United Kingdom.
