Deanndre You-Jieh Chen
I am a DPhil candidate in International Relations. My research focuses on food sovereignty movements and their contributions to critical approaches in International Relations, with a particular focus on postcolonial and Marxist approaches. I examine how food sovereignty movements in South Africa advance alternative understandings of food that is attentive to cultural and non-material aspects of life, while navigating their immediate material conditions and structural constraints.
I hold a Master of Global Affairs from the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the University of Toronto, and an MA in International Relations and BA in International Relations and Political Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand.
I am currently a Research Assistant at the Global Summitry Project, and have previous experience as a Research Assistant at the International Centre for Tax & Development.
