Overview:

Joel Battle is a DPhil International Relations student at the Department of Politics and International Relations; his supervisor is Professor Lauren Sukin. His doctoral research explores how technological change influences the United States’ nuclear strategy, and how this strategic adjustment then impacts US deterrence capabilities. Before beginning his doctoral research, Joel graduated with distinction from the Oxford MPhil International Relations program. His MPhil thesis discussed organizational learning in United Nations peacekeeping missions, and their capacity to adapt to climate-change driven security challenges. Before Oxford, Joel earned his BA in History and International Relations from the University of Exeter. Joel has also worked as a research assistant across several academic projects for almost three years. His research includes US strategy and force posture in the Middle East from the Cold War to the present, US overseas military bases in the Middle East, and US foreign policy during presidential transition periods.
