Pao Engelbrecht is an MPhil student in International Relations at the University of Oxford and an incoming Mercator Fellow. His research focuses on the intersection of climate, economic, and security policy. In his MPhil thesis, he investigates public opinion on and securitisation of green industrial policy, contributing to challenges for empirical analyses of audience acceptance in securitisation theory. He is funded by the German Academic Scholarship Foundation and the German Academic Exchange Service.

Areas of Expertise

Pao's work encompasses both quantitative and qualitative methods, with a particular focus on experimental survey design and process tracing.

Professional Experience

Prior to studying at Oxford, Pao was a research assistant at the Centre for the Future of Democracy at the University of Cambridge as well as at the OECD Statistics Directorate, where he has co-authored an OECD Conference Paper on microdata-based inequality measurements. He has worked on project development at Innovations for Poverty Action Ghana and in journalism at Dummy Verlag.
