DPIR alumni running for US Congress

DPIR alumni, Andy Kim (MPhil, DPhil IR) and Tom Malinowski (MPhil Politics), are running for seats in the US Congress.

Kim worked at the White House as the Director for Iraq at the National Security Council, where he was President Obama’s point person for coordinating the counter-ISIS war; previously, he served in Afghanistan as a diplomat and strategic adviser to General David Petraeus and General John Allen. The son of South Korean immigrants, Kim is running for Congress as the Democratic nominee against Rep. Tom MacArthur for New Jersey's Third Congressional District.

Malinowski is a human rights activist who served as Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor under President Obama; and in the National Security Council under President Clinton. Born in Poland in 1965, he fled the country, aged six, with his mother. Like Kim, Malinowski is running for Congress for the first time, and he will be the Democratic nominee against Republican incumbent Rep. Leonard Lance in New Jersey's Seventh Congressional District.

Both elections will take place on 6 November, 2018.
