DPIR’S Desmond King elected to prestigious National Academy of Sciences

Desmond King, Andrew Mellon Professor of American Government, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences in the US – one of the highest honours a social scientist can achieve.

Desmond was one of 30 international members recognised by the Academy for their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. The announcement was made by the Academy on Tuesday.

Desmond is the author of 13 books, 9 coedited books and numerous articles and chapters. His research interests include comparative government, public policy, inequality in the US, American political development and state building, illiberal social policy and comparative welfare policy and his scholarly contribution has been recognized in elections to such learned societies as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society.

Speaking on his election, Desmond said:

“I am immensely grateful to NAS for this great honour. It is a further opportunity to engage in high level social science research with colleagues in the U.S. and elsewhere.”

DPIR’s Head of Department David Doyle said:

We are incredibly proud of Des. To be elected to the National Academy of Sciences is simply an extraordinary honour. And a testament to the regard that Des is held in globally.

“I am delighted for him. Huge congratulations from the Department.”

The National Academy of Sciences is a US non-profit, non-governmental organisation and was established by Congress in 1863 to investigate, examine, and report on scientific and art subjects.
