DPIR’S Professor Rana Mitter appointed Interim Master of St Cross College

Professor of the History and Politics of Modern China Rana Mitter has been named as Interim Master of St Cross College for 2022-23.

The announcement was made by the Governing Body of St Cross after Carole Souter CBE stepped down from the post after six years at the end of last month.

Professor Mitter has been a Governing Body Fellow of St Cross since 2001 and, from 2013 to 2020, he was Director of the University of Oxford China Centre. He is a frequent contributor to print and broadcast media and his books include China’s War with Japan 1937-1945 (2013) and China’s Good War (2020). He is Vice-President for Public Engagement of the British Academy.

Rana Mitter said: “Being a fellow of St Cross has provided me with a rich and diverse intellectual environment that has complemented the disciplinary insights from my departments of DPIR and History. It is an immense privilege to have this opportunity to provide leadership for the St Cross community.”
