Federica Genovese collaborates on new interdisciplinary project exploring cities, populism and climate action

Professor Federica Genovese from the Department of Politics and International Relations (DPIR), University of Oxford, is collaborating with Dr Idalina Baptista and Dr Patricia Canelas from the Department for Continuing Education’s Sustainable Urban Development academic team on a new research initiative funded by the John Fell Fund (JFF).

The project, titled PULSE Hub — Polarized Urban Futures: Climate Action in an Age of Populism, will investigate how social and political divisions influence cities’ ability to act on climate change.

Drawing on expertise from political science, urban studies, and environmental governance, the collaboration will explore how populism, disinformation, and mistrust shape responses to sustainability policies and climate initiatives in urban settings.

An initial interdisciplinary workshop at Oxford will bring together academics and practitioners from across disciplines to share perspectives on building effective, inclusive, and resilient approaches to urban sustainability.

The PULSE Hub represents an important step in expanding Oxford’s interdisciplinary research at the intersection of politics, urban governance, and climate policy, and reinforces DPIR’s commitment to advancing collaborative research for a more sustainable future.
