‘François-Xavier Guerra Seminar’, 25 November, Paris

Date

The second ‘François-Xavier Guerra Seminar’, jointly organised by the Oxford Latin American History Seminar and CRALMI (Centre de Recherche d’histoire de l’Amérique Latine et du Monde Ibérique) took place at the University Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, in Paris, 25 November 2016.

The ‘Françoise-Xavier Guerra Seminar’ seeks to encourage regular academic exchanges between fellow historians of Latin America based in France and the United Kingdom.  It was launched at the Latin American Centre in Oxford last May, with the support of the Oxford Maison Française, when Professor Annick Lempérière, Director of CRALMI, Paris I Panthéon Sorbonne, presented a paper on ‘Antiguo régimen y modernidad en Latinoamerica: liberalismo, derecho y elecciones, siglo XIX’.

During the second ‘François-Xavier Guerra Seminar’, Pilar Pilar González Bernaldo, Professor at the Université Paris Diderot talked on ‘Fragments d’Empire ou États-nations?’, and Malcolm Deas, Emeritus Fellow at the Latin American Centre, talked on ‘Reflexiones tardías sobre el caciquismo’.  The event was a great success and we are now looking forward to the third seminar, this time in Oxford next Trinity Term.

François-Xavier Guerra (1942-2002) was Professor at the Sorbonne University.  His outstanding work offered fresh and novel understandings of the history of Latin American, while inspiring a new generation of scholarship on the region.
