‘Mere Civility’ by Dr Teresa Bejan reviewed in the New York Times

Teresa Bejan’s new book, Mere Civility: Disagreement and the Limits of Toleration, has been reviewed by the New York Times (11 January).

‘In her penetrating and sophisticated study,’ writes reviewer James Ryerson, contrasting with another book on the subject, ‘Bejan champions an even harder-headed view, that of the 17th-century religious radical Roger Williams. His conception of “mere civility” was based on “mutual contempt” rather than mutual respect.’
