Professor David Doyle will step down as Head of the Department at the end of the 2025/26 academic year following his appointment as the University's Pro-Vice-Chancellor for People and Culture.
Professor Doyle has led the Department over the past two years and will take up his new University role later this year.
The Department would like to thank David for his leadership, dedication and service during his time as Head of Department, and to congratulate him on his appointment.
After announcing the news to the DPIR community he commented:
I leave DPIR with genuine sadness. Serving as Head of Department over the past two years has been both a privilege and a pleasure. I have had the opportunity to work alongside outstanding colleagues and students, and together we have made significant progress in strengthening the department’s standing and ambition.
I hope to remain connected with many of you in the years ahead, and I thank you warmly for your ongoing support and engagement."
We are also pleased to announce that Professor David Rueda has been appointed Interim Head of Department from September 2026. David will serve for the remaining twelve months of the current Head of Department term.
His appointment has been approved by the Department's General Purposes Committee and the Social Sciences Division. The process to appoint a new Head of Department for a full three-year term, beginning in the 2027/28 academic year, will commence at the start of Michaelmas Term.
A call for nominations will be issued, and, if more than one nomination is received, an election will be held at the beginning of Trinity Term.
We congratulate David Doyle on his appointment as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for People and Culture and thank him for his dedicated leadership of the Department. We also wish David Rueda every success as he takes on the role of Interim Head of Department.
