Professor Neil MacFarlane is interviewed on possible outcomes of the current Ukraine crisis

Date

Neil MacFarlane has been interviewed recently in Azerbaijani and German media about possible outcomes of the current crisis in Ukraine.

In an article for AzerNews (1 May) entitled 'Western sanctions may increase Russia’s dependence on China' Neil said: "The real deal is long term. It has to do with European reliance on Russian energy exports. Russian behavior on Ukraine has probably managed to convince Europe that this reliance is a bad idea. The Russians exploit it. Also, the Russians are convincing Europe that they are committed to undermining Europe's neighborhood policy and that they have a different vision of Europe." In an article for Deutsche Welle (2 May) entitled 'Escalation could lead to a mess nobody wants' he said: "I don't think anybody wants a war - although I have been wrong about the Russians before - but I think they have a narrower objective regarding the elections rather than invading the place. The problem, of course, is this is a very dynamic situation. People may have reasonably well-defined objectives. But accidents can happen and escalation can be inadvertent and you end up in a place where nobody thought they were going."
