Archishman Ray Goswami
Archishman is a DPhil International Relations candidate at Green Templeton College. His research interests lie in the field of security and strategic studies, with a particular focus on the use of intelligence, counterintelligence and covert action as determinants of foreign policy.
Archishman's doctoral research at DPIR examines intelligence diplomacy and its use as a device of modern statecraft. He investigates how the tangible strategic deliverables governments aspire to through its pursuit interact with the discrete understandings of legitimacy that come into play within strategic planning across its three key variants: clandestine diplomacy, intelligence liaison, and strategic intelligence disclosure.
At present, Archishman is a Non-Resident Junior Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation, India's premier think tank focused on geopolitics and geoeconomics. Prior to his time in Oxford, he studied at King’s College London, being awarded First-Class (Hons) for both his BA in International Relations and MA in National Security Studies. He conducted research on Israel’s role in the Second Libyan Civil War (2014-2019), and ISIS’ practice of counterintelligence for his undergraduate and Master's theses respectively. During his time at King’s, Archishman took steps to expand student engagement with security and strategic studies, serving as President of the KCL Intelligence and Security Society, and as Editor-in-Chief and Vice-President of the KCL Geopolitical Risk Society. His experience within the field has also extended beyond the classroom, working in think tanks such as the Council on Geostrategy.
He also enjoys writing on geopolitics, national security and strategic affairs more widely, having authored short, medium and long-form pieces for a variety of academic platforms and journals. A full list of his published work can be found on Archishman's LinkedIn profile.
