Inequality and governance in unstable democracies: the mediating role of trust

Patricia Justino, Institute of Development studies

This collaborative project with the Institute of Development Studies aims to provide new theoretical insights and observational evidence on how trust between social groups and towards institutions shapes the relationship between economic inequality and governance.

More specifically, it explores two issues:

  • the validity of interpersonal trust measures and the meaning of interpersonal trust in a specific cultural context, and:
  • the ways in which resettled refugee communities establish (or fail to establish) trust in a new social setting.

Both issues are empirically explored in Northern Greece. Research is joint with Dr Effrosyni Charitopoulou.
