German President visits Oxford and learns more about Centre for Democratic Resilience

Date

The University of Oxford’s Centre for Democratic Resilience, showcased as one of the key research highlights, was a notable feature of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s visit to the University on Friday, 5 December.

The Centre’s research, which examines threats to liberal democracy and approaches to strengthen democratic resilience, including safeguarding academic freedom, strongly resonated with the themes of the President's speech.

As part of the visit, the President met Oxford’s Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor and attended an academic showcase in the Divinity School, which highlighted research initiatives with strong German links, including work relevant to the German economy and collaborations developed through the Oxford–Berlin Partnership and the Centre.

The President met the Centre’s Director, Professor Petra Schleiter, along with other leading academics, to discuss how cutting-edge research and international collaboration can help secure the political stability and economic vitality of open societies at a time when democratic norms are under pressure across Europe and beyond.
